A Scarborough man has been taken into custody after allegedly assaulting a Portland woman early on Thursday morning and leaving her unconscious.

Eric M. Gwaro, 28, of Scarborough, was arrested at 6:30 a.m. and charged with aggravated assault after he getting into a confrontation with a Portland woman at 3 a.m. on Montgomery Street, near the Eastern Cemetery on the east end of the city.

Lt. Scott Pelletier, who is in charge of Portland Police Department’s bureau of investigations said the name of the 25-year-old victim has not been released yet.

According to a press release, Portland police arrived at the scene and found the victim “lying in the street unconscious with extensive facial injuries.” Witnesses told police that Gwaro was hiding in a hedge near the victim. Gwaro attempted to evade officers by fleeing the scene. He was eventually taken into custody in Peppermint Park, which is located nearby on 146 Cumberland Avenue.

The victim was transported to Maine Medical Center for fractures to her face and skull.

Pelletier said he is unsure if Gwaro knew the victim.

“We are unable to determine that right now,” he said on Thursday afternoon. “We have still not been able to speak with the victim. We are not sure of the relationship between them, if there is one at all.”

Gwaro is being held at the Cumberland County Jail on a $10,000 cash bail.
