Midshipman Roscoe Thomas, 2010 graduate of Scarborough High School, is beginning his junior (second class) year at the U.S. Naval Academy. Recently the academy sailboats on which he raced this fall competed in the National Championship at Annapolis, Md. A total of 10 schools competed.

Winning five of seven races during the regatta, Navy ended up winning the Kennedy Cup National Big Boat Championship. With the victory, they earned the right to represent the United States at the Student Yachting World Cup in France in 2013.

Portland Community Chorus schedules holiday concert

The Portland Community Chorus, one of the largest choruses in New England, will be performing its annual holiday concert, “A Yuletide Celebration,” 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 and 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 at Scarborough High School.

Under the direction of Rob Westerberg, the concert features traditional holiday music, an audience sing-a-long and the Hallelujah Chorus. Tickets may be reserved by calling 449-0379.

New England Pond Hockey Festival accepting registration

The seventh annual New England Pond Hockey Festival will be held at Haley Pond in Rangeley Feb. 1-3. The tournament have at least four divisions.

Twelve rinks are been created for the two-day event. There is a food court by the rinks, tents are provided for the players, with wooden floors, hay for seating, heat and lights.

There are four divisions for players: Open Men’s Division 35 years and older; Master Men’s Division 50 years and older, Open Women’s Division any age; and Just for the Women’s Division any age.

The rink crew has created 12 rinks, with paths to each rink for players easy access for each game, a podium decorated with flags for open ceremonies, score board, head quarters trailer for scorers and general information.

The event begins with a reception party 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Rangeley Inn. A captains meeting is held at 9 p.m. and a scorers meeting at 8:30 p.m.

An opening ceremony and the opening games begin 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2.
