By Michael Kelley Staff Writer

Scarborough Police teamed up with Old Orchard Beach Police and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration last month to bust a drug-dealing operation occurring out of a Scarborough motel room, according to a media release from Scarborough Police Sgt. John O’Malley.

At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, Tania Margate, 39, of Old Orchard Beach and Star- Asia Kelley, 23, of Brooklyn, N.Y. were arrested at the Irving gas station on the corner of Route 1 and Haigis Parkway.

The arrests come after a lengthy investigation.

Officers from Scarborough, Old Orchard Beach and the DEA searched a room at the Itsa Good Motel at 314 Route 1, where Kelley had been staying.

The search yielded 12 grams of crack cocaine packaged for individual sale. The cocaine had a street value of $2,000, according to Scarborough Police.

Officers also found five grams of heroin with a street value of $5,000. There was also approximately $2,000 in cash in the room.

Margate was found to be in possession of six pieces of crack cocaine when she was arrested.

She was charged with unlawful possession of a Schedule W drug with a cocaine base and operating a motor vehicle after suspension.

Scarborough Detective Sgt. Rick Rouse said Margate was also charged with failure to appear on an outstanding warrant for failure to stop.

Kelley was charged with two counts of unlawful trafficking of heroin and crack cocaine and one count of possession of heroin after she was found in possession of four bags of heroin while being processed at the Cumberland County Jail.

Margate has been released from the Cumberland County Jail and is awaiting a Dec. 26 appearance in Biddeford District Court. As of Tuesday, Nov. 6, Kelley was being held at the jail on a $10,000 cash bail.
