There is hope for depression sufferers who do not respond well to medications.

There is hope for depression sufferers who do not respond well to medications – TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is available on an outpatient basis here in Maine. TMS Centers of Maine in South Portland has been delivering this treatment since December 2010.

TMS is an outpatient intervention that could be an option for individuals diagnosed with major depression who have not responded to trials of medications. The TMS device sends magnetic pulses to the frontal left side of the brain which generate weak electrical currents.

The theory of the treatment is that the resulting electrical currents activate neurotransmitters implicated in the symptoms of depression – serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Studies have shown that the frontal left side of the brain is an area that can be underactive in individuals with major depression, hence the rationale for the site of the stimulation.

TMS is FDA approved and covered by Anthem and Medicare Insurance. Talk with your PCP or Psychiatrist, or call 233-8804 fmi.
