Hospice offers volunteer training

Hospice of Southern Maine is accepting applications for its June Hospice Volunteer Training. The training will take place on four Fridays: June 7, 14, 21 and 28.

There will also be three half-day Saturday sessions on June 8, 15 and 22. Friday sessions will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. Saturday sessions will begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon.

The training will take place at the office of Hospice of Southern Maine at 180 U.S. Route 1 in Scarborough. Attendance at all sessions is required in order to receive certification.

Hospice of Southern Maine — Maine’s only freestanding not-for-profit hospice — is in need of volunteers throughout York and Cumberland Counties. The comprehensive training program will equip participants with the necessary skills to provide non-medical aid and support to terminally ill individuals and their caregivers. Trained volunteers offer compassionate emotional support, respite care, and assistance with practical tasks at patients’ homes or at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

Persons who have the desire to provide such an important service, who have available a minimum of four hours per week to serve a patient and their family, and who have the ability to follow through with a commitment, are invited to participate in the Hospice Volunteer Training. A Hospice Interdisciplinary Team offers support for patients, caregivers and volunteers.

Volunteers generally serve families within their own communities and are financially supported by the generosity of private contributions and grants.

Registration will remain open until one week prior to the training start date, with pre-training interviews scheduled accordingly.

For additional information, or to set up an appointment for an interview, please contact Carol Schoneberg- Robinson at Hospice of Southern Maine at 289- 3651 or cschoneberg@hospiceofsouthernmaine.org.
