Support of book sale appreciated

To the editor:

The Friends of the Scarborough Library would like to thank the many dedicated volunteers and book sale patrons who helped make the 2015 Book Sale a success.

During the annual four-day event, hundreds came to the library looking for the perfect summer read.

With more than 25,000 donated books and audio-visual titles to choose from, readers of all ages found at least one book by their favorite author.

The funds help support the library in various ways, including adding to the collection, funding the Children’s and Teen’s Summer Reading Program, and supporting free passes to Maine cultural institutions, as well as the Friends’ programs.

Once again, unsold items were donated to nonprofit organizations and Goodwill, who cordially picked them up for us.

We appreciate the generous support received from our corporate sponsors, Hannaford and Sam’s Club. Each year they donate critical supplies that we use before and during the sale. Thanks also to the VIPs who provided traffic control. It is important to note that this is a year-long effort.

Special thanks goes out to our invaluable Ray Birkner, who delivers all of the donated books to the Scarborough Public Works Department where our tireless sorters work for months before the sale.

Finally, Scarborough Public Works Department is to be highly commended, as they provide storage space for books throughout the year and transport books to the library before the sale.

The department’s efforts are crucial to our success and we thank everyone there for their help.

Plans for next year are underway.

Donated books can be dropped off in the library foyer from July through the end of May.

Again, your donated books and purchases at the sale were appreciated.

They signal your strong support of the library, as well as the Friends.
