Scarborough Historical Society meeting, 7 p.m., 647 Route 1, Scarborough. A brief business meeting is held and followed by a presentation. All monthly meetings are free to members of the public. Donations are always welcome. The presentation is about one hour in length. Guest will Zoe Thomas, education and program manager at the Saco Museum, for a presentation on the history of Christmas. First brought to America from England in the 17th century in the form of rowdy wassailing, public displays of excess and an inversion of authority, Christmas took 250 years to transform into the holiday we know today. Saturday, Dec. 5

Tree lighting/Santa in the Park, 5 to 6:30 p.m., Memorial Park, Scarborough. Wagon rides from high school parking lot begin at 4 p.m. Bundle up and gather with friends, family, and neighbors in Memorial Park. The following events will take place during Santa in the Park:

• Santa arrives at the Memorial Park Gazebo.

• Santa lights the Memorial Park tree with a special helper.

• Pictures with Santa and receive a special gift.

• Huddle up around one of several fire pits will enjoying free hot chocolate sponsored by Scarborough Rotary Club.

• Spectacular fireworks show to close the event.

Yuletide Fair, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., First Congregational Church, 167 Black Point Road, Scarborough. A Maine Christmas will be the focus of the annual fair. Features handmade items with a Maine theme, holiday greens, antiques and collectibles, books, quilts, crafts, homemade baked goods, candy and cookies. Proceeds will go to the church’s charitable efforts. A lobster roll luncheon will be available. Eat in or take-out. FMI, call 883-2342

Holiday craft fair, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Morrison Center, 60 Chamberlain Road, Scarborough. Features poinsettia and wreath sale, local crafters, a visit from Santa, raffles, bake sale, homemade lunch and more.
