Softball all-stars win state championship

Special to the Leader

Scarborough girls all-star softball (9-10) secured the Maine state championship last week.

Undefeated until they faced Shaker Valley on July 16, all 13 players and their three coaches battled through three games with their Waterboro rivals and finally won the battle with a score of 2-1 in the eighth inning of the championship game on Saturday, July 22. The district championships were hosted by Scarborough Little League at Peterson Field in Scarborough from July 15-22.

Led by head coach Marc Sawyer and his assistants, Drew Niles and Steve Nelson, the Red Storm girls were drawn from Scarborough Little League majors and minors teams at the beginning of June.

After many hours of practice, they played five games in District 6 and beat Windham, Cumberland, Yarmouth and Portland, the former state champions, to earn the District 6 title on July 10.

Scarborough All Star 9-10 girls last won the state championship in 2015.

On Friday, July 28, the coaches, players, and families will caravan to Jenkins Township, Pennsylvania, to participate in the invitation-only regional championships hosted by the Pennsylvania District 16/31 Little League.

The girls are will represent not only their hometown, but the state of Maine. The team will play and win as many games as it can before heading home on Friday, Aug. 4. They will be recognized with Eastern Regional pins at a special banquet and also at the Parade of Champions AAA baseball game.

“I hope these girls learn that hard work toward a common goal can make many great memories,” Sawyer said. “These are certainly memories that they will take with them for a lifetime.”

In addition to continuing to practice every day this week, the team and their families are busy fundraising to help defray the costs of the week-long trip and ensure that everyone can attend.

Thanks to the generosity of the Black Point Citgo station, the team organized a car wash on Sunday and is hosting a bottle drive, multiple bake sales and has created a gofundme page (http:///gofundme.com/scarborough-me-910-girls-softball).

To see them live, stop by the Scarborough High School fields through Thursday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
