C. James “Jim” Allen

After a period of declining health, C. James “Jim” Allen passed away peacefully in Scarborough on April 1, 2018. He was born Dec. 16, 1931 in Englewood, New Jersey. He was the only child of Ethel C. Quirk and Ralph Allen.

Mr. Allen grew up in the Dexter/ Garland area of Maine. He graduated from the Mt. Hermon Prep School in Massachusetts in 1951. He then attended Colgate University in New York, graduating in 1955 with a degree in history.

After college he served in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Devens in Massachusetts and at the Presidio of Monterey in California.

In 1955 he married Lorraine Adams. They had two children; Mark and Susan. They were happily married until her passing in 1996.

Mr. Allen worked for many years in the insurance industry. He originally worked for Glens Falls Insurance in New York and Pennsylvania. He then returned to Maine to work for Campbell, Payson and Noyes Insurance as one of their top executives. Campbell, Payson later became Commercial Union. He retired in 1991. He and his wife traveled for several years after his retirement.

Jim lived in Scarborough for more than 50 years. He was active in town politics and government in the 1970s. He was very proud to be an elector in the Electoral College for Maine in the 1980 presidential election.

He is survived by his son, Mark, and his wife, Laurie. He is also survived by his daughter, Susan Plunkett and her husband, Kevin. He was very proud of his five grandchildren: Caleb Allen, Tiffany Allen, Shana Plunkett, Christian Plunkett and Kylie Plunkett.

The family would like to thank Scarborough Terrace for its care and compassion for their loved one these last months.

The funeral was held at Blue Point Congregational Church at 236 Pine Point Road in Scarborough on Friday, April 6. There will be a private burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Dexter, Maine at a later date.
