Book sale a success thanks to volunteers and patrons

To the editor,

The Friends of the Scarborough Library would like to thank the many dedicated volunteers and book sale patrons who helped make the 2018 Book Sale a success. During the annual four-day event, hundreds came looking for the perfect summer read.

With more than 20,000 donated books and audio-visual titles to choose from, readers of all ages found at least one book by their favorite author. The funds earned help support the library in various ways, including adding to the collection, funding the Children’s and Teen’s Summer Reading Program and supporting free passes to Maine cultural institutions and parks, as well as helping to fund the movie licenses that provide the monthly Monday Movie at the library..

Once again, unsold items were donated to nonprofit organizations and Goodwill, who cordially picked them up for us.

The Book Sale at the Scarborough High School would not have been possible without the support and cooperation of the school department, especially Todd Jepson, facilities manager and David Creech, principal of Scarborough High School. The maintenance people and custodial staff at the high school could not have been more helpful.

Junior class students along with their advisor, Albert McCormack, were a great help again this year. They were hard workers, respectful and kept all of us in good spirits during both the setting up and breaking down days. We really appreciated their help.

Special thanks also goes out to our invaluable volunteers who deliver all of the donated books to the Scarborough Public Works Department where our tireless sorters work for months before the sale.

Finally, Scarborough Public Works is to be highly commended, as they provide storage space for books throughout the year and transport books to the site before the sale. Many thanks to Mike Shaw, director of public works and his crew for all their help.

We also want to thank Sam’s Club and Walmart for the donation of plastic wrap and many hundreds of cardboard “flats” that are so important for sorting the books.

Donations are once again being accepted at the library foyer from now through the end of May 2019. Your donated books and purchases at the sale were appreciated. They signal your strong support of the library and the friends.

Sue Helms, president,
