Local sports coverage coming to the Leader

By Pat McDonald Sports Editor

The Mainely Media newspapers have been providing great local news coverage to communities throughout southern Maine for many years, and starting now we will add local sports to each paper.

My name is Pat McDonald and I have been covering sports in southern Maine for several years as the sports editor of the Journal Tribune in Biddeford, but I’m thrilled to be joining forces with the Courier, Leader, Post and Sentry newspapers to bring great local sports coverage to their loyal readers.

I wanted to take some time today to introduce myself to the readers of all Mainely Media newspapers.

I got my first chance to cover sports when I was in high school in Athens, Pennsylvania, and quickly learned that I didn’t want to do anything else.

My career has taken me from my hometown paper — the Morning Times in Sayre, Pa. — to Washington, D.C. where I worked for Stars and Stripes, which is an independent newspaper for the United States military. I eventually went back to my hometown paper and worked for several years, but then I would get an offer to move to Biddeford to work for the Journal Tribune.

Moving to Maine was certainly not in my master plan, but I decided to take the risk and give it a chance. I found out early on that southern Maine is a special place and that’s mostly because of the people.

I was at the Journal Tribune for two years before I got an offer to work for a bigger paper. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity and left Maine for Geneva, New York. It didn’t take long for me to realize I should had never left southern Maine and when the opportunity came up for me to return to Biddeford, I jumped at the chance.

I have had the chance to cover some big events in my career — from Penn State’s Orange Bowl appearance in 2005 to several NASCAR races — but the best part of my job is covering local youth and high school sports.

Our local athletes deserve to be recognized for their hard work and I’m happy to make that happen here in southern Maine.

In the past year I’ve had the chance to follow the Saco Little League All-Stars as they made a run to the state championship and earned a trip to Bristol, Connecticut, for regionals.

I also wrote a piece on Biddeford’s Gracie Martin committing to play basketball at Harvard, and recently shared the story of several former Kennebunk High School athletes who are now working in college athletics.

It’s those kind of stories that have kept me in this business for so long and I’m excited to bring them to the readers of the Courier, Leader, Post and Sentry.

My goal is to bring excellent local sports coverage to the Mainely Media papers and I’m hoping readers can help me accomplish that.
